I. CONFERENCES

1. FIFTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE AUSTRALIAN EARLY MEDIEVAL ASSOCIATION entitled: Welcoming The Stranger In Late Antiquity And The Early Middle Ages will be held from Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 October 2008 at the Sebel Conference Suites, Charlotte Street, Brisbane, hosted by the Australian Catholic University, McAuley Campus, Queensland.

The period from late antiquity to the early middle ages was one of great social movement, of both individuals and people groups. How did people respond to demands made upon them for hospitality and charity by pilgrims, casualties of war, refugees, orphans, widows, those of other religions, the sick, the poor, itinerant monks and nuns, travelling traders and others?

Call for Papers

Papers are now invited on a broad range of topics related to the theme of 'Welcoming the Stranger in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages', tapping various sources including literature, archaeology, epigraphy and the arts. Please include affiliation and contact details with your abstract. Presenters will be invited to publish their papers in the refereed Journal of the Australian Early Medieval Association.

2. Asia-Pacific Early Christian Studies Society conference on “Letter Writing” will held at Tohoku Gakuin University, Sendai, JAPAN, in early September 2009 (tentative dates 10-12 September 2009). Dr Geoffrey Dunn and Dr Ken Parry have been invited to deliver keynote lectures. Contact Prof Miyako Demura, Tohoku Gakuin University.

II. STUDY AND WORK OPPORTUNITIES

Last autumn, the Faculty of Protestant Theology and the "Centre for Religion and Society" (ZERG) of the University of Bonn jointly launched a new one-year Masters course in Ecumenical Studies (M.A.) which is specifically designed for foreign students who wish to study theology in a German context. Part of the course is taught in English. The lecturers, who are all high-ranking experts in their respective fields, are drawn from the Faculty of Protestant Theology, the Faculty of Catholic Theology, the Seminary of Old Catholic Theology, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany and other university departments

The deadline for applications is 15 July 2008.

 III. MISCELLANEA

2. Several members of the JSPS Poverty Project will be visiting ACU in Brisbane in October 2008 for collaboration on our joint research project on Poverty in Late Antiquity.
